|SPOILER| 'Breaking Bad's' Dean Norris to guest-star

Dean Norris.
By Rick Porter

"The Mentalist" will be getting a little help from Hank Schrader later this season -- or at least from the man who plays him.

Dean Norris, who plays DEA agent Hank on "Breaking Bad," will guest-star on the CBS series later this fall, Zap2it has learned. He's set to film his episode next week, and it will likely air sometime in November.

Norris will be playing the head of a narcotics task force -- seems appropriate, no? -- who crosses paths with Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Co. during a murder investigation.

"The Mentalist" will be the second CBS crime drama to feature Norris this season. He's also appearing on "CSI: NY" in October as an internal affairs detective.

|SPOILER| Morena Baccarin to Return

Former V sextra-terrestrial Morena Baccarin is returning to The Mentalist later this season. Executive producer Bruno Heller declined to reveal the circumstances surrounding the character's comeback, except to say that it marks "the return of one of the few people who can mess with Jane’s mind."

|SPOILER| Has Patrick Jane Been Framed for Murder?

Simon Baker.
The Mentalist's third season literally ended with a bang when Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) gunned down a man he believed to be Red John (Bradley Whitford), the serial killer who killed Jane's wife and child.

But did he really kill Red John? "There's a lot of questions to be answered," creator Bruno Heller tells TVGuide.com of the Season 4 premiere (Thursday, 10/9c, CBS). "If that was Red John, then Red John was still one jump ahead of him because he was able to frame him for killing an innocent man."

Indeed, Jane pleads that Red John was holding him at gunpoint and received a call from his mole, the now-deceased FBI Agent O'Loughlin (Eric Winter), just moments before the fatal shooting. Unfortunately for Jane, no record of the call exists and the gun was nowhere to be found at the crime scene. So the next stop for Jane is prison, which Heller says Jane actually finds...enjoyable. "He's actually quite comfortable in that world. He likes the solitude," Heller says."He had been kind of taking the prison stay as a kind of spa-relaxation time out. There's time for him to think, and when he realizes that the case is more complicated than Lisbon [Robin Tunney] and the rest of the guys can handle, he gets himself out."

Complicating matters for the team is that, because of their participation in Jane's hunt for Red John's mole, they have all been suspended. "The team is also in deep trouble because they essentially engineered a disaster," Heller says. "An FBI agent is dead. It's not that they're going to go to jail for O'Loughlin's murder, but the FBI doesn't take kindly to any kind of bad PR or mess that they're not in control of."

That ultimately will lead to the hiring of a new CBI boss, Luther Wainright (Michael Rady). "He's a young guy who tries a completely different way of dealing with the CBI and Jane," Heller teases. "He's more a touchy-feely kind of guy. I think Jane finds it kind of refreshing. The guy's not stupid, and what Jane loves above anything else is a novel challenge. So any fresh target/victim/colleague/antagonist is meat and drink to him."

Is that to suggest Jane, after perhaps killing his nemesis, will have a new spring in his step? Not necessarily. "It's definitely a different Jane, but just in the sense that time changes everyone," Heller says. "He's a wiser. He's learned that a whole new level of cunning and manipulation is going to be required to keep moving forward."

Could that mean that — gulp! — Red John is still out there? Did Jane really kill an innocent man? Heller promises that the premiere will give you a definitive answer. "By the end, we will at least know what Jane thinks," he says. "And Jane is a pretty smart guy."

|SPOILER| Patrick Jane to Lock Horns with The Shield's Catherine Dent

Catherine Dent.
A female FBI agent is going to make waves on The Mentalist this season.

TVGuide.com has learned that The Shield star Catherine Dent will appear in multiple Season 4 episodes as Special Agent Susan Darcy, a seasoned and assertive FBI agent who often downplays her intelligence to get what she wants without causing friction. Even so, she's sure to rub a few people the wrong way: As we previously reported, her character will but heads with Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Agent Lisbon (Robin Tunney) when she takes over one of their cases.

"She suspects there's more to the Red John story than Jane or the CBI is telling her," creator and executive producer Bruno Heller tells TVGuide.com. "Over the course of the season, she will try to get under Jane's skin and inside his head to find the truth. Jane's not the only one who knows how to use deception and mind games to crack a mystery."

Dent, who's also held recent recurring roles on NCIS and A&E's Breakout Kings, will first appear in the fourth season's seventh episode, which will be directed by Baker. An airdate for the episode has not been set.

|SPOILER| Mega Buzz, more info about the new season and casting news

--------------------

It's been a while since you've given us anything good on The Mentalist. — Marie
ADAM: Did you enjoy Simon Baker's directorial debut last year? If so, you'll be happy to know that he's stepping back behind the camera for a November sweeps episode that introduces a new recurring FBI agent. I hear she knows how to get what she wants without causing too much friction, but she's sure to bruise some egos when she takes over a case that Jane and Lisbon bungle.

TV Guide small article about the new season

"Patrick isn't particularly phased by going to jail," says Baker.
"In fact, he fits right in."
WHERE WE LEFT OFF Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) killed his nemesis, Red John (Bradley Whitford), in the middle of a shopping center. But did he get the right guy?

WHAT'S NEXT The new season picks up mere moments after last May's shocking finale, with Jane being arrested by the mall cops. He's sentenced and thrown in the slammer with a hefty $1 million bail no one's willing to pay. Turn out that the gun Jane (and the viewers) saw in Red John's possession at the time of the killing has mysteriously vanished. "It's a symbol to Patrick that he's never going to have sence of peace or fulfillment where Red John is concerned", says Baker. "He will start to question his own sanity."

FALL FALLOUT The entire team is suspended because of the Red John mess. Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) turns cynical over the death of her FBI-agent fiancé Craig, who was revealed to be a Red John mole. Look for a new——and very young——CBI chief (Greek's Michael Rady). "The previous chiefs were like the mean chemistry teacher in high school," notes creator Bruno Heller. "This guy is like the liberal-arts teacher who says, 'Draw what you feel'. He's going to bring a new and completely fresh sensibility to the show."
